20 Minutes Into The Future: ChatGPT & AI Disruption

Hit play on the video; it will set the mood…

Interesting read from Business Insider, which identifies 10 jobs that AI is “most likely to replace”.

The article posits 10 professional roles that can be assumed by AI like Chat GPT, which has caused quite the uproar since its November 2022 launch.

In short, here are the 10 jobs the article suggests can and will be terminated:

  • Tech (coders, programmers, software engineers, data analysts)

  • Media (advertising, content creation, journalism)

  • Legal (paralegals & legal assistants)

  • Market research analysts

  • Teachers (already an issue with students using Chat GPT to cheat on their homework)

  • Accounting

  • Finance

  • Stock Trading

  • Graphic Design

  • Customer Service

I would go a step further and suggest that these professions are just the tip of the iceberg. As AI and automation processes get better and more accessible, the combination of multiple algorithms & automation systems can extend its reach to virtually any industry- architecture, engineering, library science, logistics, medicine, real estate, etc.- not to mention the government and military applications… the Skynet’s the limit.

This is why it makes me uncomfortable when I see techies sharing their-AI assisted coding accomplishments on LinkedIn- does it cross the user’s mind that at some point, the AI will be able to code itself? In some instances, it already can. In the 2010s, learning to code was a vital skill pushed on young professionals; will that even be relevant in the 2030s?

These are the questions people need to start asking themselves, especially college students, recent grads, and those just now entering the workforce.

In the last few months, I’ve seen an automated McDonald’s, I’ve watched content creators use AI to make Drake rap about beans, and I’ve witnessed anti-AI protests in the art community (an ongoing and evolving story in and of itself). We are just scratching the surface of this new and inevitable reality.

So, is it hasta la vista, baby? Certainly, it all boils down to a series of ethical questions- including those which have not yet been conceived. It is my opinion that it will be either our adhesion to ethical decision-making, or a complete lack thereof, that will mean the difference between adapting AI to enhance us, or succumbing to technology with the potential to make us obsolete. To emphasize the point, I could have used ChatGPT to write this blog post, but for now I will keep things 100% organic.

I’ll be back…
